James “Jim” W. Brown Jr., the owner as well as former CEO of Hartzell Propeller, recently passed away. Brown was a beloved part of the local aviation community, and a large group of Piqua community members and employees have fond memories of him.

Brown passed away at age 84 on Nov. 20. In addition to being a successful businessman; avid pilot; and carrier night-landing, all-weather-qualified fight pilot, he was a husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Brown was born in New Jersey on Feb. 11, 1933. He attended Princeton University before transferring to and graduating from MIT. He made the transfer so he was able to marry Constance Wright. Constance, his high school sweetheart, was his wife for almost 65 years.

Four women here in the Piqua, Ohio, community were recently honored by the Piqua Rotary Club. These women received the 2017 Pride of Workmanship Award. According to Piqua Rotary Club Chairman, Randi Pearson, since the award began locally in 1999, 90 people have received it. The program began during a Rotary Club meeting in 1975 in Australia. The original goals were promoting vocational service, encouraging a sense of pride for workmanship in every vocation, and allowing Rotary to become involved in the local business community.

It is important to note that the 2017 Pride of Workmanship Award is not the result of competition. It is given to individuals to honor and recognize their commitment and achievement. The Rotary President, Sean Ford, gave each recipient an engraved plaque. Before the presentation, Dr. Doreen M. Larson outlined her thoughts on the importance of hard work as well as how the recipients demonstrate virtues like persistence and dedication.
